Pouring water

pouringwater

Recommended Age: 2 and ½ to 3 and ½ years

Level of Parent Involvement: Low, this presentation is quite short, then once presented to the child the child may work independently

Prerequisites

  • None

Materials

  • 2 identical jugs (one containing water 2 thirds full)
  • Small sponge or cloth for wiping up spills
  • Tray

Preparation

  • Fill one of the jugs with water (2 thirds full)
  • Place the two jugs on the tray with the spouts of the jugs facing each other (the jug with the water should be on the right)
  • Place the jugs on the tray

Steps

  • Invite the child letting them know the name of the activity “This is called pouring water”
  • The child may bring the tray to the table
  • Sit to the right of the child
  • Place your right index and middle finger through the RIGHT jugs handle, with your thumb on top of the handle
  • Place your left four fingers under the lip of the jug to keep secure
  • Lift the jug from the tray, centring the spout to the centre of the LEFT jug
  • Tilt the jug so that the water pours into the LEFT jug, waiting for the very last drop of water to fall
  • Gently place the jug back onto the tray
  • Repeat as above with the LEFT jug, pouring the water back into the right, making sure you wait for the last drop to fall
  • Repeat a couple of times pouring back and forth
  • Invite the child to have a turn
  • When the child is finished show them where they can empty the water

Variations

  • Pouring from a jug into a glass
  • Pouring to a level/marker
  • Pouring from a tea pot into a tea cup (Kmart and Target have lovely aluminium tea sets perfect for this, see resource library)
  • Pouring from a carton
  • Pouring with a funnel
