Purpose: for the child to broaden their understanding about the animal kingdom whilst furthering their ability to classify
Level of Parent Involvement: Low, the adult must give the child instructions then the child may work independently
Prerequisites
- The child must have some knowledge of animals and their characteristics
- The child must know the difference between land, water and air
Materials
- Land, air and water animals chart PDF
- Land, air and water animal cut outs PDF
- Coloured pencils
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Preparation
Steps
- Invite the child letting them know that they will need to get their coloured pencils, scissors and glue stick and bring it to their table
- You bring the printed chart and animals
- Show the child the chart, pointing out the top left reading it out to the child ‘animals that live on the land’
- Ask the child if they can name any animals which live on land
- Repeat for ‘animals that live in water’ and ‘animals that live in the air
- Show the child the paper with the animals, asking the child to identify each
- Invite the child to colour in each of the animals using their coloured pencils
- When the child has finished colouring in all of the animals, let the child know they need to cut them out, using the black lines as a guide, assisting if necessary
- Once all animals have been cut out, the child may now use the glue stick to paste each animal under the respective category, determining whether each animal belongs on the land, in water or in the air
- Leave the child to work independently
- When the child has finished, let them know where they can put their work to dry

- You may print another copy of the land, air and water chart for the child to draw or write their own animals
