Download Printable: PartsoftheEarNomenclatureCards_
Recommended Age: 4 and ½ years and onwards
Level of Parent Involvement: Medium, the parent must facilitate the exercise, showing the child what to do, once the child has been shown, the activity may be completed by the child independently
Prerequisites
- Ideally, the child should be reading before they work with 3-part cards, if the child is not reading, 3-part cards become a matching exercise which changes the purpose of the exercise but caters for children who are not yet reading
Materials
- The human ear 3-part cards
- Scissors to cut the cards
- 3 elastic bands
- A basket or small box to keep the cards
- A laminator and laminating sheets to laminate the 3-part cards to extend their longevity for future work
Preparation
- Print the set of ‘The human ear’ 3-part cards
- The cards must be cut correctly, first cut the picture with the writing (no dividing line) then cut the picture on its own, then cut the label. The picture with the writing is the control, then the child matches the picture on its own to the control, then the child matches the label. The control card should match the picture card and the label (this acts as a self-correcting control of error for the child when working independently)
- Sort the control cards, pictures and labels into 3 piles, then secure together with elastic bands
Steps
- Invite the child, showing the child the basket/box of 3-part cards, the child may bring the cards to the table
- Sit to the right of the child and take out the control cards
- Name each control card placing them in a horizontal line in front of the child
- Then take the pile of picture cards, invite the child to match the picture to the control card
- Finally take the labels, if the child can read, invite the child to read the label and place with its corresponding picture, the control card as a control of error
- If the child is not yet reading they may visually match the label to the picture using the control card as a guide
- Leave the child to work independently
- Come back when the child is finished, checking all cards are matched correctly
- The child may sort the cards back into their 3 parts and work again independently or return the activity to the shelf
Variations
