Sorting Books by Colour
Recommended Age: 3.5+
Level of Parent Involvement: Medium
Materials : Bookshelf with books that the child can reach
Steps:
- Invite your child to help you organise a shelf with books. (Start with one shelf, and if the child is interested, you can always start another shelf).
- Place a mat or towel on the floor, as the designated place for the books.
- Show the child how to take out the books whose cover is of a particular colour and place them on the mat. For example, “Let’s find all the books with a blue cover and place them here.”
- After the child has found the blue books, invite him to find the books with another coloured cover, and place them together on the mat.
- Once you have space on the shelf, show the child how to place 1 or 2 books back on the shelf, arranging them so all the blue books are together, all the yellow books are together, etc.
Variations
- Show the child how to sort books by size.
- Show an older child how to alphabetise by author.
