Recommended Age: 3y+
Level of Parent Involvement: High – mostly supervision
Prerequisites
- Understands the concept of things being “the same”
- Can match objects/pictures that are the same
Materials
- A sheet of paper
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Preparation
- Choose 3 to 5 colours from those found in Colour Box 2 – red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, black, white, pink, brown and grey.
- Using these colours, draw and colour in large solid squares along one edge of the sheet of paper.
Steps
- Ask your child to choose her favourite colour from those used on the piece of paper and see if she can tell you its name – if not, tell her the name of the colour.
- Explain to the child that you are both going to go on a treasure hunt around the house and find things that are the same colour as the one that she chose. When you find an object that is the same colour take your treasure back to the piece of paper and place it next to the chosen colour. If necessary, help your child find relevant objects by drawing their attention so a specific place/container – e.g. “See if there is something red on this shelf.”
- Repeat the process with another colour used on the piece of paper.
- When you have found treasure to match all of the colours used on the paper, admire the choices that you both made. Help your child to return the objects to where they were found.
- Invite the child to play the game again with different colours.
Variations
- Play the game during a walk around your suburb. Take the piece of paper with you as a reminder of which colours you are trying to match and a reusable bag to put your coloured treasures in. When you get home, help your child to arrange the coloured treasures next to the colours on the paper and admire what you managed to collect.
- For older children, choose one colour and see how many different shades of that colour you can find. E.g. See how many different shades of green you can find in the garden, or how many different shades of brown/grey you can find amongst the pebbles in your garden.
