Recommended Age: 5 years and onwards (can be younger depending on the child’s skills and experiences)
Purpose: To present the entire structure of addition and to help the child memorise the addition combinations
Level of Parent Involvement: Medium, the adult must present this exercise to the child, once the child has been shown they may work independently
Prerequisites
- The child must be able to count accurately from 1-10 and onwards
- The child must be able to write numbers
- The child must be able to match the numeral symbol with its quantity of numbers 1-10 and beyond
- The child must have had many experiences doing addition with the golden beads
- The child has been presented to the addition strip board, presentations 1, 2, 3 and 4
- The child has been presented to addition chart 3 and has had many experiences repeating this exercise

* Booklets of squared paper
* Pencil
Note: if doing this exercise with your child from home you will be using the paper version (refer resource pack)
Preparation
- None
Steps
- Invite the child, introducing them to chart 4, together bringing the materials to the table
- Say to the child “what do you notice about this chart?” the child should respond with “less numbers” (addition chart 4 has less numbers than chart 3, which the child has worked with)
- Invite the child to take an equation and read it
- Show the child how to use the chart by placing your left index finger on the first number (for example 5+7)
- Then place your right index finger on the second number, in this case 7
- Slide your top finger to the end of that row, bottom finger slides to the right and stops beneath the top finger
- Slide your top finger down to meet the bottom finger, the answer is where your fingers meet (refer to image below 5+7=12)
- Invite the child to choose another equation and practice
- The child may write their equations on the blank paper
- Once the child can do the finger movements, invite them to pick a slip, write the equation, do the finger movements and record the answer
- The child may check the answer with control chart 1
