Recommended Age: 5 years and onwards
Purpose: To memorise the essential addition combinations with the possibility of repetition.
Level of Parent Involvement: Low, this exercise is short to present, once the child has been shown they may work independently.
Prerequisites
- The child must have had many experienced in addition with the golden beads
- The child must be able to write numbers
Materials
- addition-chart-1 (1)
- Equations with all the essential combinations of addition
- Addition equations for addition strip board PRES 1 and addition chart 1 (1)
- Pencil
OR the paper version of the above materials included in the resource pack
Preparation
- None
Steps
- Invite the child, introducing addition chart 3, together bringing the materials to the table
- Invite the child to take an equation
- Read the equation with the child (for example 5+7) and place your left index finger on the first number in the equation on the red number 5
- Place your right index finger on the second number of the equation on the blue numbers (7)
- Slide your left finger along and stop under where your right finger is
- Slide your right finger down to meet the left finger, where your fingers meet is the answer (for example (5+7=12) (refer video)
- Invite the child to do one and when the child knows the finger movements, invite them to choose an equation, write the equation, do the finger movements and record the answer
- Repeat a few more times
- Invite the child to work independently, using the equations, sliding their fingers on the board and write down the answers
- Child may check their answers with control chart 1 at the end
